Are You Getting Ripped Off by Renting a Car in Mexico?

Mexico car rentals are a great way to get around the Riviera Maya Mexico!

The freedom is great, to be able to go where you want to and when you want to. When thinking about car rentals, you have a few different options.

1) Rent a car from the airport

2) Rent a vehicle from your hotel or resort

3) Rent a car the cheapest way and while sitting in your hotel room

Let's look at these a bit closer.

If you fly into the Cancun or Cozumel airports, you will have the option to get mexico car rentals in cancun Mexico or Cozumel from the airport and drive it to your hotel, resort or destination.

This is a very easy option.

It may take you an extra hour from the time you arrive at the airport until you drive away in the car, because it is Mexico and things take a little longer.

You will pay the most money renting a car this way, but it is very convenient.

You can also rent a car through the resort or hotel that you are staying in. Most resorts have the ability to set that up for you at the hotel. This will of course be a more expensive option and is comparable in price to renting one from the airport. However, if you just want one for one day to do a day trip somewhere then it may be the best option for you.

The cheapest option and easy transportation in Mexico in the Riviera Maya would be to call a local car rentals place in Cancun Mexico and arrange with them to bring the car to where you are.

Whether it is your all inclusive resort, hotel or restaurant.

They are great with working out the details and you will save a ton of money doing this!!

So how do you do this, you might ask. Well, since getting a car at the airport is very expensive, arrange with your hotel or who you booked your hotel through to take the shuttle from the airport to your hotel.

This is how most people get to their hotel and it is like a well oiled machine at the airport so it is quite easy to figure out which shuttle you need to get on.

When you get to your hotel, checked in, relaxed, maybe have a drink or two...then you can call a local Cancun car rental place. You can get your rental car that day or arrange it for a few days into your trip.

You will get a great deal either way, but the longer you book it for, the cheaper the price will be per day.

The things to make sure of are:

1) That they can drop off the car and pick it back up from your hotel or resort. They are used to this, so do not think it is a strange request.

2) Either get rental car insurance in Mexico, or make sure that your personal car insurance will cover it. Some insurances will cover it up to a certain amount of miles into Mexico (if your from the US), but you will need to make sure.

3) Get car insurance!! Yep, I said it again because it is that important. Mexico is different than other countries and you do not want to end up in trouble because you wrecked the car.

You do not need anything keeping you from your return flight home. So pay the extra few bucks.

Curious how much my husband and I paid for a week of car rental in the Riviera Maya Mexico?

Traveling in Mexico: Where to Stay in Cancun Without Spending Your Inheritance

WHERE TO STAY IN CANCUN:

If you're dreaming of a bungalow on the beach and living with the sounds of waves lapping crystal sands as music to your ears lulling you like a lullaby - return to earth - those places cost far more than you'll probably ever be able to afford as a working English language teacher here. If you'll consider living as the locals do, then you'll be off the beach, but only a few minutes bus ride away from the powdery, sugar-like sands of one of the world's most pristine stretches of diatomaceous beach. Still interested?

Most of Cancun's more affordable hotels are near the main bus terminal on the Avenida Uxmal or the Avenida Tulum. It's an easy area to get to or away from starting from any point in the Cancun area. Buses to the beach and resorts run along the Avenida Tulum. It's also a relatively safe area at night with plenty of places to eat, shop, and work located nearby. Note: Prices in Cancun are higher than in most other Mexican cities for the same or similar services and from there rise dramatically during the Winter months.

Hotel El Alux

Avenida Uxmal No. 21

884 - 0662, 884 - 0556

This small hotel has reasonably-priced air-conditioned (you'll need it) rooms with TV, phone and hot water for 220 pesos, single or 240 pesos for a double. Staff is friendly and helpful. A travel agent and car rental agency are on the ground floor with tour information and budget-priced vehicles available. You can walk here from the bus station, just go to the corner of Avenida Uxmal, cross the street and go left for one block. It's the multi-story pink building.

Hotel Cotty

Avenida Uxmal No. 44

884 - 1319, 884 - 0550

For about the same prices as the Hotel Alux, you can get lodging in this motel-style inn across and down the street a bit. It's not as nice, but the services are adequate and rooms are clean. There are only two floors, so an elevator isn't necessary and rooms open onto a central courtyard that doubles as a parking area. Make sure to get an air-conditioned room, the Yucatan sizzles in Summer. A restaurant is on the premises with inexpensive fare on the menu. It's also open late.

Hotel Uxmal

Avenida Uxmal No. 111

884 - 2266, 884 - 2355

Two blocks further along the Avenida Uxmal, near Berlitz, this inexpensive, family-run hotel is popular with the locals as a "love motel", since the Avenida Yaxchilan is closeby. No "working girls" or "ladies of the evening" though. So, it's OK as an alternate if you're having trouble finding a place soon after arrival. Check the room first before paying as quality can vary widely. Rooms with A/C are more, but worth it if available. Prices are around 160 pesos to 180 pesos. Some rooms are even less, but without A/C, though they do have a fan.

Traveling in Mexico: Don't Fall for the Latin Fantasy Tourist Scam

THE "LATIN FANTASY": A SCAM YOU MUSTN'T GO FOR:

They're WAITING for you...Don't get caught!

Strolling down a sunlit street in Cancun (or another Mexican beach resort town), a sea breeze gently tossing your hair, window-shopping in a luxurious mall, passing along a beachfront boardwalk, day-dreaming of fresh, succulent seafood as its aroma wafts from a nearby restaurant. "Excuse me", you hear. You stop and turn to see a smiling face. "Where are you from?"

"I'm from ...", you respond politely.

"How's your vacation?", the smiling face continues. You exchange pleasantries.

"Can I offer you a free pass...a night's stay...a free lunch or dinner...a day at this new resort hotel?", the smiling face offers. "It's to promote a new hotel, ...resort...facility...or service that isn't well-known to foreign tourists yet. And we want our hotel...facility...resort...or service to be known so you can tell your friends about it."

You receive a genuine-looking piece of paper and perhaps a brochure and map. (somewhere in the back of your mind, your parent's words- or mine- appear, "There ain't no free lunches in this world") But, "Looks good", you think, and accept.

"Take this and go this afternoon...tomorrow or whatever and everything will be taken care of with no obligation", the hook advances.

And then the clincher words strike home, like a harpoon in the side of a great white whale, "Be sure to bring your credit card!" "Oh, it's not essential", the smiling face continues, "Maybe you'll just have to flash it, to show you're not Mexican", "...or a serious tourist", or whatever.

At this point BAIL OUT - drop everything and leave - go, keep going and don't listen or look back. If you don't, you'll be sorry - for years and years to come.

What they want is your credit card number, by any means necessary - your signature too, if possible, on anything; a ticket stub, free car rental agreement or thank you note; anything. It'll be used to charge dozens, scores, even hundreds of items - next week, next month, next year, etc., etc., etc. Getting the charges off your card will be a next to impossible nightmare and cost you hundreds in legal fees. You won't be able to get back at "them" or recover the merchandise, products, even real estate charged off to your account. Millions are made by "them" and irretrievably lost by unsuspecting tourists each year. Don't YOU be next! Just say, "NO". And keep saying "NO".

Convenient and Affordable Day Trips For Cancun Visitors at Xel Ha

Though there is plenty of excitement to be found within the bustling Hotel Zone of Cancun, ecotourists and adventurous families have long enjoyed the city for its unique day-trip opportunities and proximity to diverse natural sights. Located 60 miles from Cancun, the eco-park known as Xel Ha has quickly become one of the area's top destinations. Known primarily for its incredible array of water sport activities, the eco-park is also an excellent relaxation destination, as it boasts secluded beaches, dense rainforests and a lengthy maze of placid rivers and lagoons. Additionally, like many of Cancun's best day trip opportunities, Xel Ha caters to all ages and is remarkably easy to reach from the Hotel Zone.

As it is located along a picturesque stretch of the Caribbean coast, water sports stand as the park's biggest draw. One of the most popular activities - the Dolphin Swim - is staged within a scenic lagoon near the shore. The park employs several experienced dolphin trainers that have helped these gentle animals learn a number of games and impressive tricks. They offers two distinct programs at the lagoon: one that allows visitors of all ages to interact and play with the trained dolphins and a fully-interactive experience that allows swimmers to the be pushed along the surface of the water. Visitors that want to see dolphins in their natural habitat can also sign up for the Delphinus Trek tour, a guided underwater walk with armored, deep-sea-style suits and oxygen systems. The park also offers a similar Sea Trek program that explores a vibrant area of coral reefs and tropical fish.

Crystal-clear lagoons similar to the dolphins' home can be found throughout, as the park rests atop a major section of the Yucatan Peninsula's famous underwater river system. The numerous lagoons and cenotes - surface openings that provide access to a maze of rivers and caverns - can be explored by travelers during snorkeling or scuba diving tours. The park also offers snorkel and scuba tours along the Caribbean coast, allowing visitors to witness some of the Mayan Riviera's most impressive offshore destinations. Regardless of where visitors choose to explore the park's underwater sights, a vast array of tropical fish species and other underwater creatures will always be on display. A snorkeling school is also available for those new to the sport, where young explorers and first-time snorkelers can learn basic techniques and receive hands-on instruction. The rivers and lagoons can also be explored by kayak, while special destinations such as Stingray City allow visitors to interact with some of the Caribbean's most fascinating creatures.

Despite the seemingly endless water sport opportunities available, there are also plenty of activities for visitors hoping to stay dry. One of the most popular destinations is the secluded white-sand beach located along the Caribbean shoreline. Much like the beaches of Cancun, the beach at Xel-Ha is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery that made the Mayan Riviera famous. Those in search of outdoor relaxation should also visit Hammock Island, a scenic area overlooking the dolphin pools that features a full-service bar, while the vast jungle of the park is home to activities and opportunities such as the Jungle Train bus tour, numerous mountain biking trails and preservation projects such as the park's plant nursery and apiary. After experiencing the natural sights, visitors can find locally-produced souvenirs at the park's several boutiques or enjoy massages and other treatments at the park's scenic, environmentally-conscious spa known as the Xpa.

The park also boasts a remarkable history, as the area served as a vital port for the Mayan city of Coba. Just inside the main entrance to the park, visitors will find a small collection of Mayan ruins, including some structures that are yet to be fully excavated. Near the shoreline, visitors can visit the Mayan Wall, a remnant of a protective fortress that dates to the height of the Mayan Kingdom. Xel Ha also played an important role in colonial history, as the Spanish conquistadors used the fertile area as a base for expeditions into the Yucatan Peninsula.

Though Xel Ha is located 60 miles from Cancun along a remote stretch of the Mayan Riviera, the park has become a convenient day-trip destination. The park operates a private shuttle that picks visitors up each morning along Boulevard Kukulkan, the heart of Cancun's Hotel Zone. After enjoying a day at the park, the shuttle returns day trippers to their Cancun resorts around 7 PM. Travelers with rental cars or other forms of transportation can visit Xel Ha every day throughout the year from 8:30 AM to 6 PM.

Families hoping to experience the natural beauty of the Cancun area need not look any further than the conveniently-located Xel Ha. Boasting some of Mexico's best preserved and most diverse ecological sights, Xel Ha has quickly become one of the top ecotourism and outdoor recreation destinations in the country. As the park also features affordable entrance and tour rates year-round, Xel Ha stands as one of the best sightseeing values in the Mayan Riviera.

Rental Car Insurance - Will it Break the Bank Or Save You Money?

Mexico car insurance is a necessity if your planning on getting a rental car in Mexico.

You're planning your vacation in the Riviera Maya Mexico and I can imagine how many questions you may have. Which hotel or resort to choose? How long to stay? Should I rent a car? Should I pay the extra bucks for car insurance?

Well, the decision is of course up to you, but I would highly recommend that you get car insurance for your rental car in Mexico.

Before you decide, call your current car insurance and find out what they cover. Some will cover a rental car up to 15 miles across the border, but even if this is so, you need to think about how far away your hotel or resort is.

You may be able to increase your current insurance to actually allow you more coverage for Mexico car insurance on a rental. So, look at these two things before you make any decisions, because you definitely do not want to pay for rental car insurance when you actually have the coverage already.

If you do not have enough rental insurance coverage through your own policy, then you will want to go ahead and get the rental car insurance in Mexico that is offered through the rental car company.

There are two different types of Mexico car insurance coverage available. Full coverage insurance and Collision Damage Waiver insurance. These are different and do not offer the same coverage!

Full coverage will costs you about $50 USD extra per day, but if you get into an accident you will not have to pay anything(except maybe a deductible) and it will save you a ton of hassle and time. If you got a scratch on the car during your rental period, when you return it, it is all covered under the full coverage.

Collision damage waiver insurance is not full coverage insurance. Most rental car companies offer this coverage. If you get into an accident, then they determine how much you pay based on the value of the car. If the car costs $18000, then you would be responsible for paying $1800 out of your own pocket if the car is damaged or stolen.

A rental car company will most likely not offer information to you on the Mexico car insurance they offer. They will simply tell you how much it is to add car insurance for Mexico to your daily rental.

You will need to ask to make sure you know what you are getting and make sure you are ok with this.

There are several rental car companies that do offer Mexico car liability full coverage such as: Hertz, Executive, Cancun Car Rental, America, Explore and Continental.

I would recommend going with a car rental company that can offer you the full coverage, because you do not want to be stuck paying a lot of money if you get into an accident.

It is worth it to pay a little more on the front end, to avoid paying a lot of money in the end (that is just in case you were to get into an accident).

Remember, your in Mexico. Things are done very differently in Mexico than in any other county. The Riviera Maya is a beautiful place and you will enjoy seeing it through the windows of a rental car much more than a taxi.

Mexico For Less

Now that the threat of a H1N1 pandemic in Mexico has subsided, it is considered safe for the reasonably healthy to travel there. Relying heavily on tourism, many cities have been hard hit by the travel restrictions that were imposed during the height of the crisis. It has been reported that in Mexico City alone the losses are in excess of four million USD per day. In an effort to bounce back from the financial trauma inflicted on the local economy by the flu virus and the preceding global financial crisis, most resorts and hotels are offering amazing deals in an effort to rebuild. Tour operators and airlines, also hard hit, are offering promotions and upgrades in the hopes of returning to some semblance of normalcy.

If you have ever wanted to explore Mexico and wish to stretch your dollar as far as possible, this is your golden opportunity. With airfares slashed as low as 45% below 2008 rates and hotels/resorts as much as 15%, the time to book is now. Those lucky enough to have guests are extending over the top service hoping that word will get around and the tourists will start flowing in.

Never has it been so easy or inexpensive to visit this amazing country full of history and natural beauty. Your travel options are virtually unlimited. Book a stay at a full service resort or rent a cheap car [http://www.autoeurope.com/car-rental/Mexico.cfm] and tour the countryside. There are scores of cheap hotels (made even cheaper due to current events!) from Cancun to Monterrey and beyond. Start your holiday on the perfect beaches of Cancun and then head out on the open road stopping in the small towns and big cities along the way.

No matter what your budget or taste, there is something in Mexico for everyone. From the historic center of Mexico City to the Mayan ruins of Tulum to the stunning beaches of Acapulco, there is something in Mexico for everyone at a price that fits all budgets!

All Inclusive Cancun Vacations - Find Deals on Flying, Sailing, & More

Cancun is the most popular resort city in Mexico. It's known for being an exotic beach with clear waters, luxurious resorts, entertainment, exciting nightlife, and so forth. It's been a top, spring break tourist spot for a decade or so now. College kids in the US and Canada, newlyweds, and travelers who simply want to get away and enjoy themselves for a couple of days take advantage of all inclusive Cancun vacations every single year.

It's hard to believe that just 30 years ago, the city was a tiny fishing village with less than 125 people! These days, tourists come in from all over the world every single year, bringing a lot of money with them. If you want to be a tourist this year, your best bet is to go with a vacation package rather than trying to pay for everything separately.

Since it's such a hot spot for tourists, the resorts, restaurants, and entertainment centers in the area offer amazing deals as part of a package. Just look online for all inclusive Cancun vacations and you will find countless options. Cruise ships usually stop in the area and let passengers spend a day enjoying excursions as well. Whether you want to fly there or sail, you can find some great discounts and coupon offers that will help you save.

The most popular travel websites, such as Travelocity and Expedia, should be the first places you look. Hotels, resorts, airlines, cruise lines, etc. all team up to provide consumers with all inclusive Cancun vacations. These packages are advertised at the most well known travel sites. You can also visit forums and blogs to see if you can find any deals. Bloggers, webmasters, and other travelers will keep others updated on deals.

Since Cancun caters to every type of traveler, you might be eligible for certain discounts. For instance, there are tons of honeymoon vacation packages to choose from, as well as family-friendly vacations, student discounts, and so forth. Even if you just want to go by yourself, you can still find some money saving opportunities.

You can avoid crowds by not going during spring break. Airfare and accommodation are usually cheaper during the fall. In winter, tourists from Europe flock to Cancun to get away from cold weather. In spring, American and Canadian college students all like to visit.

However, if money isn't an issue, and you want to go this winter or spring yourself, just look online to check out all inclusive Cancun vacations. You should be able to find a good package that includes everything, including airfare, cruise deals (if you want to go on a cruise), hotel accommodation, car rental, dining, and so forth.

Choosing All-Inclusive Mexico Resorts

Mexico or the United Mexican States is North America's federal constitution republic. It is one of the world's most visited countries. It offers several interesting historical sights, miles of palm trees and white sandy beaches. The most popular vacation spots in Mexico are Cozumel, Cancun, Taxco, Acapulco, Mexico City and Cuernavaca. These places promise a thriving nightlife, interesting attractions and comfortable Mexico resorts as well as hotels.

Baja California - Here, popular vacation spots are San Jose Del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. Aside from its beaches, activities you can enjoy here include diving, whale watching and water sports.

Mexican Riviera - In this part of Mexico, popular vacation spots include Mazatlan, Ixtapa and Puerto Vallarta. It offers beautiful beaches by the Pacific coast, quiet hideaways, jungle escapes, romantic retreats and culture as well as arts venues.

Yucatan Peninsula - Places you can consider are Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Cancun and Tulum, It features the ruins of the Old Mayan civilization, the beaches by the Gulf of Mexico and activities like dolphin watching as well as diving. Many honeymooners love Cancun for its luxury Mexico resorts and hotels that offer special promos, packages plus freebies.

Thus, if you'd rather go for a Spanish colonial feel, the best places in Mexico are Oaxaca, San Jose De Allende, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Choosing All-Inclusive Mexico Resorts and Hotels

Going to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, particularly in popular vacation spots like Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen ensures an assortment of activities, cuisines and entertainment - for the price of one package. By doing so, you don't need to worry about carrying cash around to pay for food, services and lodging. Even the airport-resort/hotel transfers are included. Tips and taxes are also part of the all-inclusive rate. Many think this is the economical way to spend a vacation. However, if you're the type who wants variety and not all of you eat much, getting an all-inclusive package isn't really a good option. This is since most of the vacation spots in Mexico are lined up with different restaurants, clubs, bars, discotheques and other live entertainment venues. This is not so convenient if you'll be spending your days touring these areas, which means, you won't be in the resort/hotel most of the time. Then again, there are also all-inclusive Mexico resorts that provide tours and excursions to the Mayan ruins as well as other area attractions.

Cancun All-Inclusive Resorts

Both Riviera Maya and Cancun offer the most inviting Caribbean beaches. These places boast of world class resort accommodations and very friendly people. In fact, Cancun is presumably one of the world's most famous sun destinations. Apart from the exciting nightlife, Cancun, is known for world class shopping venues and activities like scuba diving and motorized/non-motorized water sports.

Blue Tulum & Resort Spa - This all-inclusive resort in Mexico offers 72 elegantly furnished rooms with either an ocean or garden view. They have a fitness center, bar, pool, Jacuzzi, meeting rooms and even wedding facilities. They offer special promotions like up to 50% discount and complimentary car rentals if you stay for three nights. They also give free $100 Spa credits (only applicable for Spa massages) per day for each room you book. The starting rate in this 5-star Mexico resort is $125.37.

Isla Mujeres - Is Said to Be a Caribbean Hideaway and More

Isla Mujeres is a small Island just across the bay from Cancun, surround by the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. It can clearly be seen from the mainland and is only a 15 minute ferry ride away.

Isla Mujeres was a fishing village and maintains to this day, a relaxed easygoing way of life. It is like traveling back in time, walking down cobbled street, watching the Island families carrying out their daily life - pure magic!

The Spanish explorer Francisco Hernandez de Cordova landed on the Island in 1517 and found female status, from where the Island was named "Island of Women". The ancient Mayan's visited Isla Mujeres on pilgrimages to their goddess Ixchel, however the only remaining evidence of this, is the lighthouse that stands, at the southern most point of the Island.

In later years a pirate built an enormous estate called "Hacienda Mundaca" in the hope of winning the heart of an Island girl. He failed and returned to the mainland, with a broken heart.

If you wish to visit the enchanting Island of Isla Mujeres there are three ways to travel from Cancun.

1. By car ferry from Punta Sam

2. By fast ferry boat from Puerto Juarez

3. By tourist boat from El Embarcadero, near by to Cancun hotel area.

You will leave behind the hustle and bustle of Cancun, and enter an Island paradise, with a warm welcome from the locals, world famous white sand beaches and so much more...

When you arrive the most popular means of transportation are bicycles, mopeds and golf buggies, all of which can be easily rented. There are also taxis, which are red, they are very cheap and can be waved down anywhere on the Island.

Relax on the white sand beaches, swim in the gleaming turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Take a diving trip to the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks. You can snorkel and scuba at the Nature Reserve Park. Take a trip around the island visiting all its attraction and even swim with the dolphins.

Downtown has great seafood restaurants, bars and bistros. If you fancy a little shopping meander around the cobbled street and I am sure you will find a little gem.

More than anything enjoy the laidback atmosphere and warm welcome of Isla Mujeres.

If you would like to know a little more about Isla Mujeres, I suggest you visit http://www.islamujeres.co.uk

Playa del Carmen Vacation Rentals

Although Playa del Carmen is a destination full of simple pleasures like swimming, sunbathing, and strolling along its soft sands, your accommodations need not be run of the mill when you stay in a vacation home rental. Completely unique and beyond compare, you can enjoy all of the luxuries of home during your stay in paradise while surrounding yourself with the finest attractions and most pristine beauty this region has to offer.

The fine white sands of Playa del Carmen, not powdery like its Mayan Riviera counterpart Cancun, are the perfect jumping off point for any recreational pursuit you can imagine. Strolling along the sand, sunbathing in its softness, or swimming in its refreshing waters are all favorite activities along this stunning stretch and are easily within reach when you rent a vacation home. Since many vacation rentals are located directly on the beach, whether it be in a condo building or a private villa, cozy comforts and convenient sand access are at your fingertips in a home away from home.

When you stay in a waterfront Playa del Carmen vacation rental, you can wake up to the sound of the waves washing ashore and a brilliant sunrise that seems to pop right out of the water. While these may seem like little parts of your day, they are only the beginning of your true appreciation for this naturally stunning setting. After you pull yourself away from your bedroom window, a light and airy kitchen beckons with fresh coffee and a spacious patio where you can simply soak in the delights of your private Caribbean oasis.

While the morning may have you thoroughly enamored with the Mayan Riviera, Playa del Carmen vacation rentals have even more to offer since the water and soft sands await just steps away. On the north sands and particularly on Playa Tukan, you would have to get up early to stake out a supreme resting spot for the day. However, since you are staying directly on the water, you can beat the resort crowds to the prime stretches of sand or simply use your patio as a secluded beachfront sanctuary away from the crowds that will inevitably arrive once morning is in full force.

Since it is unlikely that you can spend sunup to sundown under the warm Mexico sun, your accommodations can also be a comfortable safe haven when you need some time to cool off or want an energizing lunch. Kick back on the cozy sofa while you watch the news on the big-screen TV or prepare a hearty sandwich, made to your own specifications, in the fully-equipped kitchen. If the sun has worn you down and you need a nap, don't worry about being suddenly awoken when other individuals arrive back at your accommodations since you can retreat to your private bedroom for a quiet and restful slumber.

Beyond your beachfront excursions, many Playa del Carmen rentals are a short walk away from Quinta Avenida, which is ideal so you don't need to find a place to park in this pedestrian-only area. However, if you want to head to the Mayan ruins in Coba and Tulum, your car is always easily accessible in your private garage or personal parking spot. A day of exciting adventure awaits, so simply grab your group and go for a memorable look at these archeological pieces of history.

Whether you want to explore the scenic landscape or soak in a little history during your Playa del Carmen journey, a vacation rental facilitates the relaxing and exciting vacation you always imagined. While you expect easy access to everything amazing outdoors, the indoor delights of your rental home, including wireless internet, a private Jacuzzi complete with waterfall, and a media room, allow you to unwind and bask in the splendor of your day without the usual complaints of boredom and tedium. For an all-around spectacular getaway that is sure to have you coming back year after year, book your Playa del Carmen villa rental today.

Cancun on a Budget

Cancun is one of my favorite places for a vacation. I have found that the least expensive way to go is through a company like funjet.com. They can sell you a package that may include airfare, transfer from the hotel, and the hotel. If you get an all inclusive package, things like food, drinks, and entertainment are included. The cost varies depending on the time of year and city you fly from. The prices also fluctuate as the currency exchange rate changes. The hotels are rated from one to five stars. I have gone from Houston for 3 nights, to a 4 star hotel, all inclusive, for $299 per person (last year). There is a tax to Mexico of about $80 per person that is additional, but you really don't have to spend for anything else if you don't want to. Whatever the rate for 3 nights is, you can usually get 4 nights for about $100 extra per person. Rates for 7 nights will usually start around $699 per person. Some of the hotels will have specials where kids can stay and eat free. You do have to pay the extra airfare for the kids. There is good bus service that runs every fer minuites so you don't need a rental car.

You can get a brochure for Funjet or a similar agency from your local travel agency. There are also websites like www.tripadvisor.com that have a lot of information and reviews. I suggest reading reviews for the hotel you have in mind before booking. Be sure to consider the location of the hotel you select. The first selection is in Cancun itself or out of the city, sometimes called the Mayan Rivera. If you like to have a large choice of places to go, Cancun is better. If you want more seclusion and relaxation, out of the city could be better. Cancun is shaped like an L, if you stay near the center it is easier to get around. I like the all inclusive packages best. I have found that the four or five star hotels are worth the extra cost for all exclusives, mainly for the better food. If you are not taking kids you may want to consider avoiding the hotels with kids stay free specials. Try to book an early flight out and a late flight back, especially if you are going for 3 or 4 nights.

Cancun Travel Agencies

As tourism is one of the most promising industries in Cancun, there has been a growing demand for travel agencies over the past few years. There are a number of family-run and private travel agencies throughout the coastal city.

Cancun travel agencies are solely committed to provide you the most enjoyable vacation experience. They compile information from different sources and organize travel itineraries. Based on your budget and preferences, the travel agencies suggest the best tour and related activities.

Both inbound and outbound tours are organized. They make necessary arrangements for your hotel accommodation, transportation, car rental, and recreation. All necessary international travel information such as your entry requirement, custom regulation, and currency exchange rates are provided. Most travel agencies offer travel insurance for their customers. Travel protection is also ensured, that is, they provide reimbursement if you are dissatisfied with their services.

Travel agencies offer their services using telemarketing, direct mail, and the Internet. They provide exciting discounts, when a reservation is placed online. Tailor-made tour packages are also offered, which suit both budget and luxury travelers. Apart from these, many hotels, cruise lines, and travel companies use Cancun travel agencies to promote their travel packages.

A number of sources are available for finding Cancun travel agencies. The best way is to search them online. You can go through message boards, which will have information about the local travel agencies in your area. You can also read reviews. Another consideration is to ask around to your friends and family members.

Before depending on any travel agency, you must make sure that it is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). Such travel agents can work with other society members and find the best deals for the travelers. Some travel agencies in Cancun are accredited by the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) also.

Always choose experienced travel agencies, which maintain a good relationship with other recognizable companies in the travel industry. Such agencies will be capable of getting special deals on hotels, airfare, and other ticket reservations.

Renting A Car In Cancun Cautions

All, Please be warned that even though your credit card may cover damage to your rental car, that is all it would cover. Insurance purchased through the rental agency is the only way to get liability coverage in this part of the world!

When Katey and Ron rented their car at the Cancun airport, they had the impression that their gold credit card would provide the Collision Damage Waiver part of the rental-- as is common in the USA-- and so they declined to purchase this vehicle coverage to save money. (Collision Damage Waiver eliminates the driver's responsibility for damage to a rental vehicle.) Not good! Later they learned that during the duration of their rental they had not had this protection at all.

Basically, visitors are well-advised to over-insure rather than risk any possibility of under-insurance. Accidents do happen in this area, and even in the case of a minor dent your hassles can mount alarmingly without insurance coverage by a Mexican company. You may even be required to pay damages on the spot. Don't be penny-wise and pound foolish!

Also with your Cancun car rental avoid driving in heavy rains as puddles will hide the pot-holes.

Avoid driving after dark. Look out for people walking animals or stray animals.

Make sure that your rental car has good windshield wipers and make sure your rental car is properly insured!

When you rent your car, you will get a form indicating certain things related to the car or vehicle.

It contains basic information like mileage, the rental date, and the car's gas level.

It also has boxes to indicate that the car has working windshield wipers, seat belts, mirrors, spare tires and other things your Cancun vehicle has. The important part of this checklist for you is the area where you mark existing damage for the vehicle. The car could have dents, scratches, chips, tears, stains, marks. Verify please! And make sure it's indicated where applicable.

You should be very thorough when signing the check-list.

A dollar will get you a dime or a peso will get you a centavo your car runs on gas. Perhaps the car is given without filling the tank completely. If it goes out near empty, you're supposed to return it at the same level. If it goes out half full, you are expected to return it half full.

In the event you return the car with less than gas than when the car was given to you figure you'll be charged higher rates for the gas than at the pump. In Mexico, if you park illegally, the police may remove a license plate if they have a screwdriver and can figure out how.

Then you will have to go to the police station (transito) and pay a fine to get your plate back. If you return a car with a missing plate, the rental company will charge you a fee for it's recovery.

Verify if your car has a license plate in the front and back when it is given to you. On brand new cars in may have a paper permit taped in the car's rear window in lieu of plates. When any doubt ask us. In the event the vehicle is missing one plate when you sign for it insure this is so indicated on the rental form.

Don't be shy to indicate any imperfections with your car and write them on the form!

And don't leave the keys in the ignition and lock the door afterwards. Last month a nervous girl called us from Playa del Carmen doing just that. We barely made it down there in time to open her car so she could get to the airport in time for her flight.

Cancun Time Share Rental - Make Your Friends Jealous With a Cancun Time Share Rental

Are you tired of unfulfilled vacations that are more of a hassle than a relaxation? Do you want to know how to enjoy your vacation and allow your entire family to have a great time? There is only one way to go for the best and most relaxing vacation of your life and that is with a Cancun time share rental. Timeshares are great and here is why.

You have two different options with time shares. You can find someone that already owns one and rent it off of them. Craigslist and your local classifieds are great for this. Your other option is to buy one yourself, use it, and rent it out to cover your costs.

You can actually get a time share for a very affordable price, especially if you can get into a newer one that is in the process of building all their different buildings. We are going to assume that you buy a time share, let's say in Cancun, and you keep it for 20 years.

If you get 2 weeks every year and you can split it into two different trips, then you can go to Cancun once a year and rent it out once a year as well. So, how much can you get this type of time share for? We will use a figure that is on the very high end of $20,000. Then, add $250 a year for maintenance so the total will be $25,000.

That is not much considering what you pay for a vacation each year. So over 20 years that will be $1,250 a year, but there will be interest so we will round it up to $1,500 a year. If you use it for one of your two weeks, then you have a great resort vacation with everything you need and all you have to deal with is airfare, food, and extras.

Then, if you rent it out for the other week you can get some of your money back. Let's say you charge $1,000 a week for the rental. This is a bit low, but it will work. Now you have a Cancun vacation each year and $1,000 coming in each year from your time share. So it ends up costing you all of $500 a year for 20 years, then just $250 for maintenance each year after that.

On top of this you will be able to enjoy many pools, tennis courts, golf courses, top restaurants, live entertainment, and many other great amenities on the resort. You will also get travel discounts for car rentals, airfare, and stays at other resorts within the network as well.

A Cancun time share rental is great for those of you that love to vacation once a year and when you give it away as a wedding gift for a week or you rent it out to a friend you will make them so jealous that they will want to either rent it from you again or buy their own.

A Primer For Travelers to Cancun Mexico

Cancun Travel

Cancun basically has two zones, the Downtown Cancun and of course the Hotel Zone. Downtown Cancun is full of budget tourists, students etc, whereas the Hotel Zone has very luxurious and huge 5 star hotels and up market resorts.

The hotel zone is a small strip of land in the form of the number 7 which is connected to the main land on both edges. The downtown Cancun is safe, and you Cancun travel is possible easily by taking the local transports.

All hotels have tourist information and there is a Tourism Office in Cancun which has helpful staff that will guide you well. This is by and large a safe city and you can explore it on your own. The distances between the Hotel Zone and Downtown Cancun are not possible to cover by walking. You will definitely need to travel the Cancun City using the bus service or the taxi service.

CANCUN TRAVEL - BUS

This is the most easy and convenient way to travel in and around Cancun. Just board a bus and buy a ticket. All tickets are at the same price, no matter where you boarded the bus and where you will get down. There are plenty of interesting places to explore in Cancun and the bus can take you there. The bus station is located in Downtown Cancun. There are buses that take you to Playa Del Carmen from where you can take the ferry to Cozumel which offers snorkeling and diving. Buses go up to Tulum where there are Mayan ruins.

To travel in Cancun by bus, you can purchase your tickets from Cancun bus terminal. The bus service is excellent with buses playing every ten or fifteen minutes.

CANCUN TRAVEL - TAXI

Taxis are cheerfully painted green and white. They may not be the cheapest way to travel in Cancun, but there are many and they are convenient. You must settle the fare before boarding the taxi otherwise you may be overcharged! Moreover, drivers may or may not know English so you must be careful.

CANCUN TRAVEL - CAR RENTAL

Cars are available on rent and they cost US $60-$80 a day. To rent a car you must be 21 years old and possess a valid license. That being said, it is generally advised that people should avoid renting a car. In Yucatan driving is on the right. Gas stations are difficult to come by. Since buses and taxis are easily available, one may as well avail of their services.

You can even rent scooters and mopeds in the Hotel Zone. They offer you a thrilling and unique kind of experience, but these are dangerous. It is mandatory to wear a helmet while driving scooters and mopeds.

There are many modes to Cancun Travel, but by far, the most popular way is the bus. It is convenient, economical and fast. However, the normal warning for tourists applies here too. One must remember to be careful and alert about personal safety and the safety of your belongings.

Touring Cancun leaves you rejuvenated and relaxed with an everlasting happy impression on your mind. Located at the tip of Yucatan peninsula, this heaven on earth boasts ecoparks, archeological sites, golf courses, modern shopping malls, an array of water sports and delicious cuisines from all around the globe. Visited by millions every year Cancun is fast becoming the "in" place to get married or renew the vows. The pristine white beaches, smooth sandy beaches and friendly locals are sure to win your heart each time you come here.

Opting for an all-inclusive holiday may give you the chance to unwind completely. Packages that offer only airfare, hotel and car rental may give you a good combo deal. But you can't completely unwind while deciding on trivial things like arranging your snorkeling gear or renting fishing equipment. A Cancun all-inclusive package generally gives you a seven-day stay at a four or five star hotel. Besides booking your hotel, air tickets and arranging for car rental, the package offers you free food, beverages and drinks. Even your towel needs are also in this plan. However, remember to keep the token carefully since you have to pay for the replacement if you lose it.

Most hotels have more than one specialty restaurant. You can eat in any of them but you may have to pay to eat in a specialty restaurant.

Beach chairs are also included in the all-inclusive package deals, and so are your snorkeling gear, gymnasium, scuba lessons and entry to the children's club. With these details taken care of you are sure to put up your feet and enjoy the vacation to the hilt.

Cancun is split in two sections: one is the hotel zone located between a lagoon and seaside hotels on Cancun Island and the other is Cancun City/Downtown located on the mainland and home to the many Mexicans living in the district. Exploring the City of Merida - Investing in Yucatan Peninsula Condominium Properties

Last week, I described in brief, the history of Yucatán Peninsula starting from its discovery by Hernández de Córdoba, describing the Mayan artisan influence in this region and emphasizing the importance of Mayan people for the Mexican tourism industry. As well, I have described Yucatán's geological phenomena such as lack of above-ground rivers, abundance of limestone deposits and the wonders of cenotes or deep holes filled with underground waters.

This week, I would like to talk about my experiences in the city of Merida. I have rented a car and started my journey from Riviera Princess located in the Mayan Riviera, driving towards the city of Cancun on the main highway referred to by the locals as "la federal". From Riviera Princes to the city of Cancun I drove for about 120 kilometers, contemplating the views, gathering a feel for the road and the Mayan population.

The highway is well-maintained, although it contains a lot of "los topes" or bumps in the road, which serves as a government strategy to reduce speed in more populated areas. Sometimes, these annoying topes are so badly marked (yellow paint used) that I almost found myself flying through the air in my rental car.

The city of Cancun is located to the east of "la federal", so I turned towards the west onto another highway (la federal 180) which links Cancun to the great city of Merida.

To reach Merida, (located approximately 320 km from Cancun) I drove through the cities of Xcan, Chemax, Valladolid, Dzitas, Tunkas, Izamal, to finally reach the Centertown of Merida. Merida has a fascinating history; this city was built primary on top of the ruins of the city T'ho (old Mayan city). The magnificent Catholic cathedral has been constructed using stones transported from actual Mayan pyramids. The Mayans cherish Merida as a special place in their culture, believing that this was the centre of the universe, a point were all lines intersected (or energy center). Currently, modernized Merida serves as cultural and commercial meeting place were a wide variety of goods is freely exchanged. Merida has many parks which become populated by people of various cultures, loud music at night, dance and rejoicing. Merida brings foreign tourists who roam around in search of colonial treasures.

The main city centre known as zocalo, fills one city block, and is bordered by Calle 61 (calle means street in Spanish) to the north, Calle 62 to the west, Calle 63 to the south, and Calle 60 to the east. The best way to rediscover the city is to use a local city map and roam around, one can never get lost, because the streets are numbered this way; even-numbered streets run north-south, with numbers increasing to the west and odd-numbered streets run east-west, increasing to the south. During my stay in Merida, I explored the following sites: Zocalo, The municipal palace, The cathedral of Saint Idelfonso, The casa de Montejo, The regional museum of anthropology and history, The museum of popular arts, and el parque Hidalgo (free marimba concerts).

Cathedral de Saint Idelfonso: This old cathedral is over 400 years (built in 1598), making it the oldest cathedral on the American continent. Like most colonial structures in the Yucatan Peninsula, the cathedral was built using stones stolen from the Mayan temples of T'ho. The main feature of the cathedral is an impressive 20-meter wooden representation of crucified Christ, which is claimed to be one of the largest crucifixes in the world.

Palacio del Gobierno: Built from 1883 to 1892, the palace was built using two architectural styles known as Tuscan (main floor) and Dorian (upper floor).

The Palace contains gigantic murals which tell the story of Spanish domination over Mayan culture and the history of the Yucatan peninsula. The painting encountered above a stairway shows the Maya belief that their ancestors were made from maize.

I participated in Jarana performances known as the "Yucatecan colonial dance" usually held on Monday evening between 9 P.M. to 10 P.M. Merida is surrounded by many historic palaces and on Sunday, which is the busiest time of the week, I was treated to an open air folklore show at the zocalo near the front of the Palacio Municipal.

The Casa de Montejo: This structure displays a 16th century portico which was built in 1549. This was a former residence of the city founder, Francisco de Montejo. The carved façade, according to the Toltec tradition, demonstrates warriors standing on their conquests' heads.

There is a wide variety of inexpensive hotels that one can stay at:

Hotel Trinidad Galeria (I stayed in this one), is a colonial mansion filled with works of art, some very questionable, yet still interesting. The cost of the stay was something like 20$ per night. The other hotels which seem to be habitable are: Casa Bowen, Hotel Montejo and Hotel las Monjas. In order to be able to admire all these cities in Yucatan Peninsula a lot of time is needed. This situation can be easily reconciled by investing in a condominium property, so that you may have an anchor in one part of the peninsula and roam around to the other areas such as Merida. One possible solution to this dilemma is to own a condo hotel mexico, that is a good investment which practically pays for itself. You can rent out the condominium for profit while you are away, and live in it yourself while you explore various parts of Yucatan Peninsula, including Merida.

Next week, I will explore my voyage to the Chichen Itza, one of the most important archeological sites in Mexico, and in Yucatan Peninsula.

Cancun - The Caribbean Coast's Crown Jewel

The depth of Mexico's more than 1000 year old history is perfectly portrayed by its natural beauty and breathtaking beaches and this is evident from exotic locations like Cancun. Cancun has so much to offer as a well loved Caribbean holiday location as well as a modern day beach resort.

With its crystal clear tropical waters that lures you in to its fabulous white, sandy beaches stippled with a wide array of restaurants, shopping locals, clubs and much more, Cancun has just so much to offer. Being easily accessible by air, it also makes it ultra convenient and more affordable to visit than many other beach destinations.

If you have been hesitant about traveling to a far off foreign destination, you can rest assure that you will feel right at home in Cancun. With its manicured lawns, good roads and English proficient community who by the way accepts the dollar as a currency, you will still think that you might just be somewhere exotic back home.

Cancun has one of Mexico's most contemporary and busiest airports. Even so, it is still fairly easy to get around from the one end to the other. The airport is situated close to the southern end of the mainland and it will take you about twenty five to forty minutes to get from the airport to downtown Cancun City also referred to as Ciudad Cancun. Public transportation in Cancun is relatively cheap and buses and taxis abundant.

The roads in Cancun are outstanding and there are ample stop offs close to shopping malls and shopping locations for busses and taxis. If however you are considering a rental car, it will not save you a large amount of money due to public transport being so affordable, but it might actually be a good idea if you would like to take a trip down the coast or would like to do some specific sightseeing.

Getting Around Cancun

As there is so much to see - both within Cancun's Hotel Zone and beyond the city - you should make preparations for getting around. Even if your hotel or resort offers some shuttle services, you will most likely make use of other forms of transportation while in Cancun. In fact, nearly every visitor to Cancun takes advantage of the transportation options provided by public buses, taxis and rental cars. Regardless of your budget and how you want to see Cancun, you will be able to find reliable and affordable transportation when visiting the city.

If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, the public bus system is one of the most effective ways to get around Cancun. Routes 1 and 2 (shown on maps as R1 and R2) service the entire Hotel Zone and run throughout the night. As fares in the Hotel Zone typically cost only 75 cents, there is certainly no more affordable way to get around the most exciting part of Cancun. However, it is advisable to keep Mexican pesos on hand when riding buses in Cancun, as you might have difficulty getting change with American currency. It is also a good idea to pick up a copy of "The MAP," a free pocket guide that details all of the local bus routes. This locally-produced guide will be readily available at the airport when you arrive in Cancun or at your resort.

If you plan on riding buses to get from your hotel to the beaches and activities of the Hotel Zone, it is important to remember the kilometer markings of your destinations. Nearly all of the buses servicing the Hotel Zone remain on the 25km route - Avenida Kukulcan - that runs from the mainland to the end of the peninsula. The area closest to the mainland - also known as 'the top of the 7' because of the overall shape of the Hotel Zone - comprises kilometer markings from 0 to 7.5. If you plan on going out at night, you will find that many of the popular bars and nightclubs are located at the corner of the '7' at kilometer marker 7.5. Most of the resorts and best beaches in Cancun are located on the eastern side of Avenida Kukulcan from kilometers 8 to 20. When riding buses in the Hotel Zone - especially between kilometers 8 and 20 - you may want to remember some landmarks in addition to the distance markers to avoid missing your stops.

The public bus system also makes regular trips to downtown Cancun, known as El Centro. Running each day from 6 am to midnight, Route 1 picks up passengers all along the Hotel Zone and drops off in front of downtown Cancun's most popular outdoor market on Avenida Tulum. While in El Centro, you can enjoy a number of authentic Mexican restaurants and shop for everything from clothing and jewelry to locally-made arts and crafts. If you want to travel affordably outside of Cancun, you can also find routes to plenty of exciting destinations from the Cancun Bus Station located on Avenida Tulum.

While not as affordable as public buses, taxis also provide an effective way to get around Cancun. Regardless of where you are staying, you shouldn't have any trouble hailing a taxi at any time of day. Generally, fares within the Hotel Zone range from $6-10, but it is possible to negotiate prices with any cabdriver. If you want to take a taxi to El Centro, fares generally start at $8 and can be much higher depending on the length of the trip. As taxi service is in highest demand at night as a safe way to visit bars and clubs, some drivers may ask for higher fares. Yet, if you negotiate a price with your driver before getting in, you shouldn't have any trouble finding an affordable ride.

For those that want to carve their path or travel outside of Cancun, there are several car rental agencies located in the Hotel Zone. While a car rental might be impractical for tourists spending most of their time within the Hotel Zone, adventurous travelers will have a chance to see Cancun and the spectacular sights of the Mayan Riviera their own way. Though it is possible to visit destinations such as Chichen Itza and Tulum with organized tours, car rentals can allow tourists to spend as much time as they like at such sites and even make stops along the way. If you simply want to explore the Hotel Zone and El Centro on your own schedule, a scooter or moped rental might be a good option. However, as driving in Cancun can be difficult for the uninitiated, scooter rentals are typically recommended to those who have ridden before.

Regardless of what type of traveler you are, there are plenty of ways to get around Cancun quickly and affordably. If you make a good plan for yourself, you shouldn't have to worry about transportation at all. After all, with so much to see and experience in Cancun, you'd rather spend your time having fun.

Ideas For Cheap Mexico Vacations

During these times of economic slowdown, recession and layoffs, life can be pretty stressful and monotonous. You feel that you are bound by shackles with nowhere to go, no respite from bad news on TV and all around. Perhaps, a vacation on a pristine beach in an exotic location is what the doctor ordered for you. You need to take out time for yourself and for your loved ones. A time to unwind, rejuvenate and get refreshed. But you may think how you can afford a vacation.

Believe me, you can have a perfect beach vacation that won't pinch your pocket. All you have to do is do some homework and plan out the whole Vacation in Mexico. Normally, while planning a beach vacation various factors come in to play. The first step in your preparation and planning should be selecting a location. If you want an exotic location then Mexico can be a perfect choice for Americans. It's very close to USA and many transportation options like airlines, car rentals, shuttles or your own transportation are available. Pick the one best suited to you and your budget. You can save a lot of budget in choosing judiciously. If choosing to go by air, select budget or cheap airlines since Mexico is quite close to USA . Going by road is another cheaper and fun option.

For a vacation in Mexico, choose the best beach. After all, this is what you have come for. Beach should be beautiful, clean and easy to reach. For accommodations choose rental condos or homes that are easily available in Mexico. These are much cheaper then staying in hotels. This is definitely an option for people living in border areas of USA close to Mexico.

Usually, there are several beach tour organizers which offer planned beach tour packages. Our advice is to stay clear of them if you want to save on money. Most of them are overpriced. Planning and making the arrangements yourself can save lot of money. All you have to do is invest sometime in researching for the best hotel deals or cheapest rental accommodations. Not only will you be able to save precious bucks but also gain lot of knowledge about the place you are visiting. Also, there is lot of freedom and flexibility when you are not bound by tour operator's timetable. You can pick and choose the best destination according to your preferences. When it comes to food, Mexico offers great cuisine. Hi class restaurants can burn a hole in your pocket. We suggest you to try local joints and street food. You can safely eat street food. Most of them have good hygienic conditions and serve delicious Mexican specialties.

Vacations are the times when you bond with your family. Connect with your inner self. Vacations are not just about huge expensive all inclusive resorts. Surely, you can choose that also. But in these trying times, we need to save for the future. But that doesn't mean that we have to forgo all the fun. You can make decisions wisely and plan a cheap beach vacation in Mexico. I am sure that you will go back to with loads of memories of your kids making sand castles, your wife and you sunbathing on the sand. These simple memories will last a lifetime and bring back a smile on your face whenever you will think of them.

Cancun Safety - Top 3 Tips to Be Safe

We all hear stories about Mexico, and increase in the crime rates, the cartels, and all.  Cancun is a great vacation spot, and it is fairly safe, as long as we take some common sense precautions.  Here are my top Cancun safety tips to make your next travel to Cancun, Mexico more enjoyable:

1. Don't travel to out-of-the-way places in rental cars - If you are not familiar with the area, stick to established tours, which are plentiful and reasonably priced.  If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, you can book your tour right from the hotel; although outside the hotels, you can find better deals for the same tours!  So for example, there are great tours to Xel-Ha and Chichen Itza if you are interested.  We did not have problems when we traveled to Cancun and rented a car, and that was two years ago.  I think the situation now requires a bit more caution because of the general situation in Mexico.

2. For females, stay in the Hotel Zone especially at nights, and go around in a crowd.  We all hear stories about drugs that can be slipped into drinks, females getting ride from unlicensed cabs and getting into trouble, etc.  So don't do it.  Don't drink too much either, and stay with your friends.  Even better, stick to the Hotel Zone and you should be fine, as the standards are pretty high there.  Also remember the legal drinking age in Cancun: 18.

3. Don't drink the water:  Well, that is a cliche, isn't it.  But it is good to be safe and stick to bottled water whenever possible.  If you are in a place that does not feel safe, then stick to bottled drinks, e.g. beer from bottle (or can).  I have found the Hotel Zone to be generally safe for drinks; I would be more worried in the city, or in outlaying areas.  It is better to be safe than sorry.

Cancun safety should be on your mind when traveling to the paradise.  It is no different from traveling to any other place, you have to know what you are doing.

Driving to South Akumal From the Cancun Airport

When staying in Akumal, you will find that rental automobiles provide an economical form of transportation in and around the town. You can take the direct route and go from the Cancun airport to Akumal via Highway #307.

Akumal is an easy drive on a well-maintained four lane divided highway from the Cancun airport. We are located 100 kilometers south of the airport, which equals to a 1 to 1½ hour drive.

From the airport, take the first right exit to Highway 307. Just follow the Playa del Carmen exit signs south onto the roadway. There is a Pemex station and McDonald's on the right just after getting on 307 if you need gas or a snack. In 20 minutes, you can stop at Puerto Morelos for gas or a convenience store. Although many filling stations are available in Mexico, it's always a good idea to stop if you have less than a quarter of a tank of gas left.

Further along highway 307, you will pass through Playa del Carmen. There are many eateries here as well as mega supermarkets. Don't go over 80 kph as they use radar extensively. And watch out for topes (speed bumps)! They love them in this whole area.

After you pass Puerto Aventuras, you are only 10 minutes from the Akumal overpass.

To get to South Akumal check your odometer at the overpass in Akumal and travel exactly 4 kilometers past Akumal to the return at Bahia Principe and then go back towards Akumal for 2 kilometers where you will see the drive for South Akumal (Akumal Sur).

If you want to go to North Akumal just make a U-turn at the first returno after the overpass and then turn right at the overpass. When entering the village of Akumal, you will pass an information stand. This stand is an ideal place to pick up a regional map of the area for current and future reference during your trip!

Just before the Arch, you will see the Super Chomack on your right, and Mulgren's Lavenderia, Oshun Boutique, and Minisuper Las Palmas on your left. The outdoor market may be open, and is a good area to buy some fresh produce for a sample of the local fare. If you failed to make reservations before arriving in Akumal, the information stand will also be able to send you to a good local establishment.

Something to note about the drivers in Mexico is that observing stop signs is considered optional. Taxicabs seem to have the right of way, and it is best to just stay patient and let the other drivers to do what they wish.

Defensive driving is the most important skill when operating a car in and around Akumal. If you feel afraid driving in a foreign land, perhaps you should hire a taxi driver.
