Isla Mujeres - Is Said to Be a Caribbean Hideaway and More

Isla Mujeres is a small Island just across the bay from Cancun, surround by the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. It can clearly be seen from the mainland and is only a 15 minute ferry ride away.

Isla Mujeres was a fishing village and maintains to this day, a relaxed easygoing way of life. It is like traveling back in time, walking down cobbled street, watching the Island families carrying out their daily life - pure magic!

The Spanish explorer Francisco Hernandez de Cordova landed on the Island in 1517 and found female status, from where the Island was named "Island of Women". The ancient Mayan's visited Isla Mujeres on pilgrimages to their goddess Ixchel, however the only remaining evidence of this, is the lighthouse that stands, at the southern most point of the Island.

In later years a pirate built an enormous estate called "Hacienda Mundaca" in the hope of winning the heart of an Island girl. He failed and returned to the mainland, with a broken heart.

If you wish to visit the enchanting Island of Isla Mujeres there are three ways to travel from Cancun.

1. By car ferry from Punta Sam

2. By fast ferry boat from Puerto Juarez

3. By tourist boat from El Embarcadero, near by to Cancun hotel area.

You will leave behind the hustle and bustle of Cancun, and enter an Island paradise, with a warm welcome from the locals, world famous white sand beaches and so much more...

When you arrive the most popular means of transportation are bicycles, mopeds and golf buggies, all of which can be easily rented. There are also taxis, which are red, they are very cheap and can be waved down anywhere on the Island.

Relax on the white sand beaches, swim in the gleaming turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Take a diving trip to the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks. You can snorkel and scuba at the Nature Reserve Park. Take a trip around the island visiting all its attraction and even swim with the dolphins.

Downtown has great seafood restaurants, bars and bistros. If you fancy a little shopping meander around the cobbled street and I am sure you will find a little gem.

More than anything enjoy the laidback atmosphere and warm welcome of Isla Mujeres.
