The freedom is great, to be able to go where you want to and when you want to. When thinking about car rentals, you have a few different options.

1) Rent a car from the airport

2) Rent a vehicle from your hotel or resort

3) Rent a car the cheapest way and while sitting in your hotel room

Let's look at these a bit closer.

If you fly into the Cancun or Cozumel airports, you will have the option to get mexico car rentals in cancun Mexico or Cozumel from the airport and drive it to your hotel, resort or destination.

This is a very easy option.

It may take you an extra hour from the time you arrive at the airport until you drive away in the car, because it is Mexico and things take a little longer.

You will pay the most money renting a car this way, but it is very convenient.

You can also rent a car through the resort or hotel that you are staying in. Most resorts have the ability to set that up for you at the hotel. This will of course be a more expensive option and is comparable in price to renting one from the airport. However, if you just want one for one day to do a day trip somewhere then it may be the best option for you.

The cheapest option and easy transportation in Mexico in the Riviera Maya would be to call a local car rentals place in Cancun Mexico and arrange with them to bring the car to where you are.

So how do you do this, you might ask. Well, since getting a car at the airport is very expensive, arrange with your hotel or who you booked your hotel through to take the shuttle from the airport to your hotel.

This is how most people get to their hotel and it is like a well oiled machine at the airport so it is quite easy to figure out which shuttle you need to get on.

When you get to your hotel, checked in, relaxed, maybe have a drink or two...then you can call a local Cancun car rental place. You can get your rental car that day or arrange it for a few days into your trip.

You will get a great deal either way, but the longer you book it for, the cheaper the price will be per day.

The things to make sure of are:

1) That they can drop off the car and pick it back up from your hotel or resort. They are used to this, so do not think it is a strange request.

2) Either get rental car insurance in Mexico, or make sure that your personal car insurance will cover it. Some insurances will cover it up to a certain amount of miles into Mexico (if your from the US), but you will need to make sure.

3) Get car insurance!! Yep, I said it again because it is that important. Mexico is different than other countries and you do not want to end up in trouble because you wrecked the car.

You do not need anything keeping you from your return flight home. So pay the extra few bucks.

You can walk here from the bus station, just go to the corner of Avenida Uxmal, cross the street and go left for one block. It's the multi-story pink building.

For about the same prices as the Hotel Alux, you can get lodging in this motel-style inn across and down the street a bit. It's not as nice, but the services are adequate and rooms are clean. There are only two floors, so an elevator isn't necessary and rooms open onto a central courtyard that doubles as a parking area. Make sure to get an air-conditioned room, the Yucatan sizzles in Summer. A restaurant is on the premises with inexpensive fare on the menu. It's also open late.

Two blocks further along the Avenida Uxmal, near Berlitz, this inexpensive, family-run hotel is popular with the locals as a "love motel", since the Avenida Yaxchilan is closeby. No "working girls" or "ladies of the evening" though. So, it's OK as an alternate if you're having trouble finding a place soon after arrival. Check the room first before paying as quality can vary widely. Rooms with A/C are more, but worth it if available. Prices are around 160 pesos to 180 pesos. Some rooms are even less, but without A/C, though they do have a fan.

"Excuse me", you hear. You stop and turn to see a smiling face. "Where are you from?"

"I'm from ...", you respond politely.

"How's your vacation?", the smiling face continues. You exchange pleasantries.

"Can I offer you a free pass...a night's stay...a free lunch or dinner...a day at this new resort hotel?", the smiling face offers. "It's to promote a new hotel, ...resort...facility...or service that isn't well-known to foreign tourists yet. And we want our hotel...facility...resort...or service to be known so you can tell your friends about it."

You receive a genuine-looking piece of paper and perhaps a brochure and map. (somewhere in the back of your mind, your parent's words- or mine- appear, "There ain't no free lunches in this world") But, "Looks good", you think, and accept.

"Take this and go this afternoon...tomorrow or whatever and everything will be taken care of with no obligation", the hook advances.

And then the clincher words strike home, like a harpoon in the side of a great white whale, "Be sure to bring your credit card!" "Oh, it's not essential", the smiling face continues, "Maybe you'll just have to flash it, to show you're not Mexican", "...or a serious tourist", or whatever.

At this point BAIL OUT - drop everything and leave - go, keep going and don't listen or look back. If you don't, you'll be sorry - for years and years to come.

What they want is your credit card number, by any means necessary - your signature too, if possible, on anything; a ticket stub, free car rental agreement or thank you note; anything. It'll be used to charge dozens, scores, even hundreds of items - next week, next month, next year, etc., etc., etc. Getting the charges off your card will be a next to impossible nightmare and cost you hundreds in legal fees. You won't be able to get back at "them" or recover the merchandise, products, even real estate charged off to your account. Millions are made by "them" and irretrievably lost by unsuspecting tourists each year. Don't YOU be next! Just say, "NO". And keep saying "NO".

Well, the decision is of course up to you, but I would highly recommend that you get car insurance for your rental car in Mexico.

Before you decide, call your current car insurance and find out what they cover. Some will cover a rental car up to 15 miles across the border, but even if this is so, you need to think about how far away your hotel or resort is.

You may be able to increase your current insurance to actually allow you more coverage for Mexico car insurance on a rental. So, look at these two things before you make any decisions, because you definitely do not want to pay for rental car insurance when you actually have the coverage already.

If you do not have enough rental insurance coverage through your own policy, then you will want to go ahead and get the rental car insurance in Mexico that is offered through the rental car company.

There are two different types of Mexico car insurance coverage available. Full coverage insurance and Collision Damage Waiver insurance. These are different and do not offer the same coverage!

Full coverage will costs you about $50 USD extra per day, but if you get into an accident you will not have to pay anything(except maybe a deductible) and it will save you a ton of hassle and time. If you got a scratch on the car during your rental period, when you return it, it is all covered under the full coverage.

Collision damage waiver insurance is not full coverage insurance. Most rental car companies offer this coverage. If you get into an accident, then they determine how much you pay based on the value of the car. If the car costs $18000, then you would be responsible for paying $1800 out of your own pocket if the car is damaged or stolen.

A rental car company will most likely not offer information to you on the Mexico car insurance they offer. They will simply tell you how much it is to add car insurance for Mexico to your daily rental.

You will need to ask to make sure you know what you are getting and make sure you are ok with this.

There are several rental car companies that do offer Mexico car liability full coverage such as: Hertz, Executive, Cancun Car Rental, America, Explore and Continental.

I would recommend going with a car rental company that can offer you the full coverage, because you do not want to be stuck paying a lot of money if you get into an accident.

It is worth it to pay a little more on the front end, to avoid paying a lot of money in the end (that is just in case you were to get into an accident).

Remember, your in Mexico. Things are done very differently in Mexico than in any other county. The Riviera Maya is a beautiful place and you will enjoy seeing it through the windows of a rental car much more than a taxi.

Cancun on a Budget

Cancun is one of my favorite places for a vacation. I have found that the least expensive way to go is through a company like funjet.com. They can sell you a package that may include airfare, transfer from the hotel, and the hotel. If you get an all inclusive package, things like food, drinks, and entertainment are included. The cost varies depending on the time of year and city you fly from. The prices also fluctuate as the currency exchange rate changes. The hotels are rated from one to five stars. I have gone from Houston for 3 nights, to a 4 star hotel, all inclusive, for $299 per person (last year). There is a tax to Mexico of about $80 per person that is additional, but you really don't have to spend for anything else if you don't want to. Whatever the rate for 3 nights is, you can usually get 4 nights for about $100 extra per person. Rates for 7 nights will usually start around $699 per person. Some of the hotels will have specials where kids can stay and eat free. You do have to pay the extra airfare for the kids. There is good bus service that runs every fer minuites so you don't need a rental car.

You can get a brochure for Funjet or a similar agency from your local travel agency. There are also websites like www.tripadvisor.com that have a lot of information and reviews. I suggest reading reviews for the hotel you have in mind before booking. Be sure to consider the location of the hotel you select. The first selection is in Cancun itself or out of the city, sometimes called the Mayan Rivera. If you like to have a large choice of places to go, Cancun is better. If you want more seclusion and relaxation, out of the city could be better. Cancun is shaped like an L, if you stay near the center it is easier to get around. I like the all inclusive packages best. I have found that the four or five star hotels are worth the extra cost for all exclusives, mainly for the better food. If you are not taking kids you may want to consider avoiding the hotels with kids stay free specials. Try to book an early flight out and a late flight back, especially if you are going for 3 or 4 nights.

Renting A Car In Cancun Cautions

All, Please be warned that even though your credit card may cover damage to your rental car, that is all it would cover. Insurance purchased through the rental agency is the only way to get liability coverage in this part of the world!

When Katey and Ron rented their car at the Cancun airport, they had the impression that their gold credit card would provide the Collision Damage Waiver part of the rental-- as is common in the USA-- and so they declined to purchase this vehicle coverage to save money. (Collision Damage Waiver eliminates the driver's responsibility for damage to a rental vehicle.) Not good! Later they learned that during the duration of their rental they had not had this protection at all.

Basically, visitors are well-advised to over-insure rather than risk any possibility of under-insurance. Accidents do happen in this area, and even in the case of a minor dent your hassles can mount alarmingly without insurance coverage by a Mexican company. You may even be required to pay damages on the spot. Don't be penny-wise and pound foolish!

Also with your Cancun car rental avoid driving in heavy rains as puddles will hide the pot-holes.

Avoid driving after dark. Look out for people walking animals or stray animals.

Make sure that your rental car has good windshield wipers and make sure your rental car is properly insured!

When you rent your car, you will get a form indicating certain things related to the car or vehicle.

It contains basic information like mileage, the rental date, and the car's gas level.

It also has boxes to indicate that the car has working windshield wipers, seat belts, mirrors, spare tires and other things your Cancun vehicle has. The important part of this checklist for you is the area where you mark existing damage for the vehicle. The car could have dents, scratches, chips, tears, stains, marks. Verify please! And make sure it's indicated where applicable.

You should be very thorough when signing the check-list.

A dollar will get you a dime or a peso will get you a centavo your car runs on gas. Perhaps the car is given without filling the tank completely. If it goes out near empty, you're supposed to return it at the same level. If it goes out half full, you are expected to return it half full.

In the event you return the car with less than gas than when the car was given to you figure you'll be charged higher rates for the gas than at the pump. In Mexico, if you park illegally, the police may remove a license plate if they have a screwdriver and can figure out how.

Then you will have to go to the police station (transito) and pay a fine to get your plate back. If you return a car with a missing plate, the rental company will charge you a fee for it's recovery.

Verify if your car has a license plate in the front and back when it is given to you. On brand new cars in may have a paper permit taped in the car's rear window in lieu of plates. When any doubt ask us. In the event the vehicle is missing one plate when you sign for it insure this is so indicated on the rental form.

Don't be shy to indicate any imperfections with your car and write them on the form!

And don't leave the keys in the ignition and lock the door afterwards. Last month a nervous girl called us from Playa del Carmen doing just that. We barely made it down there in time to open her car so she could get to the airport in time for her flight.

That is not much considering what you pay for a vacation each year. So over 20 years that will be $1,250 a year, but there will be interest so we will round it up to $1,500 a year. If you use it for one of your two weeks, then you have a great resort vacation with everything you need and all you have to deal with is airfare, food, and extras.

Then, if you rent it out for the other week you can get some of your money back. Let's say you charge $1,000 a week for the rental. This is a bit low, but it will work. Now you have a Cancun vacation each year and $1,000 coming in each year from your time share. So it ends up costing you all of $500 a year for 20 years, then just $250 for maintenance each year after that.

On top of this you will be able to enjoy many pools, tennis courts, golf courses, top restaurants, live entertainment, and many other great amenities on the resort. You will also get travel discounts for car rentals, airfare, and stays at other resorts within the network as well.

A Cancun time share rental is great for those of you that love to vacation once a year and when you give it away as a wedding gift for a week or you rent it out to a friend you will make them so jealous that they will want to either rent it from you again or buy their own.

A Primer For Travelers to Cancun Mexico

Cancun basically has two zones, the Downtown Cancun and of course the Hotel Zone. Downtown Cancun is full of budget tourists, students etc, whereas the Hotel Zone has very luxurious and huge 5 star hotels and up market resorts.

The hotel zone is a small strip of land in the form of the number 7 which is connected to the main land on both edges. The downtown Cancun is safe, and you Cancun travel is possible easily by taking the local transports.

All hotels have tourist information and there is a Tourism Office in Cancun which has helpful staff that will guide you well. This is by and large a safe city and you can explore it on your own. The distances between the Hotel Zone and Downtown Cancun are not possible to cover by walking. You will definitely need to travel the Cancun City using the bus service or the taxi service.

CANCUN TRAVEL - BUS

This is the most easy and convenient way to travel in and around Cancun. Just board a bus and buy a ticket. All tickets are at the same price, no matter where you boarded the bus and where you will get down. There are plenty of interesting places to explore in Cancun and the bus can take you there. The bus station is located in Downtown Cancun. There are buses that take you to Playa Del Carmen from where you can take the ferry to Cozumel which offers snorkeling and diving. Buses go up to Tulum where there are Mayan ruins.

To travel in Cancun by bus, you can purchase your tickets from Cancun bus terminal. The bus service is excellent with buses playing every ten or fifteen minutes.

CANCUN TRAVEL - TAXI

Taxis are cheerfully painted green and white. They may not be the cheapest way to travel in Cancun, but there are many and they are convenient. You must settle the fare before boarding the taxi otherwise you may be overcharged! Moreover, drivers may or may not know English so you must be careful.

CANCUN TRAVEL - CAR RENTAL

Cars are available on rent and they cost US $60-$80 a day. To rent a car you must be 21 years old and possess a valid license. That being said, it is generally advised that people should avoid renting a car. In Yucatan driving is on the right. Gas stations are difficult to come by. Since buses and taxis are easily available, one may as well avail of their services.

You can even rent scooters and mopeds in the Hotel Zone. They offer you a thrilling and unique kind of experience, but these are dangerous. It is mandatory to wear a helmet while driving scooters and mopeds.

There are many modes to Cancun Travel, but by far, the most popular way is the bus. It is convenient, economical and fast. However, the normal warning for tourists applies here too. One must remember to be careful and alert about personal safety and the safety of your belongings.
